The Diaper Cake - A Centerpiece With a Purpose

!±8± The Diaper Cake - A Centerpiece With a Purpose

A diaper cake is a great gift idea for a baby shower or for welcoming home a new born. Although it looks like an expensive tiered cake, a diaper cake can be inexpensive to make and can be designed to fit any theme.

You will need a few items. A large package of diapers. I prefer using a larger size diaper rather than new born since larger diapers are easier to handle. Cloth diapers can be used to create an eco friendly cake. A box of rubber bands, several large rubber bands, two sided tape, the cardboard core from a roll of paper towels, a cardboard cake board, fancy ribbon and items you wish to use for decorations.

Decorating the cake is a lot of fun because you can get as creative as you like. Choose several items such as toys, bottles, brush and comb, etc. Decorate a diaper cake for a boy themed with animals and trucks. A theme of butterflies and lady bugs look adorable on a cake for a little girl. A Winnie the Pooh theme works well for boys and girls. A bath theme could include several rubber ducks, baby power, shampoo, soap, etc. A plush animal set on the top of the cake is a nice touch but don't choose a stuffed toy that is too large because it will over power the design.

Start by rolling the diapers into cylinders so that the top of the diaper is in the middle of the roll. Use a rubber band to secure each rolled diaper. Arrange the rolled diapers around the empty paper towel tube. Keep this first layer in place using a large rubber band. Arrange a second row around the first, securing the second row with a large rubber band also. A twelve inch cake board should take three rows of diapers. Use the same technique for creating the second and third layers.

Measure lengths of ribbon to go around each of the layers. Make sure to cut your ribbon a little longer so that it overlaps some. Position the ribbon to cover the rubber band. Secure the ribbon with the two sided tape making sure it is tight enough so that it doesn't slip but not so tight that it puckers the diapers. Decorate your diaper cake with the items you have chosen. Arrange them around the various levels until you are satisfied with how they look. Then, using the two sided tape, tape them to the ribbon.

You now have an adorable gift that looks good enough to eat!
